Steam vs Hot-Water Boilers: What NYC Homeowners Should Know
Prewar buildings across Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx overwhelmingly use steam heat, where the boiler creates steam that rises through pipes into radiators. Newer or renovated homes are more likely to use hot-water (hydronic) systems, which circulate heated water via a pump rather than relying on steam pressure.
How to tell which system you have
If your radiators have a single pipe and make a distinct hissing or knocking sound as they heat up, you likely have steam heat. Two-pipe radiators with a quieter, more consistent warm-up are typically hot-water systems.
Why it matters for repairs
Steam systems rely on proper water level and pressure control, while hot-water systems depend more on circulator pump function and system balancing. A technician needs to know which system they're working on before diagnosing a no-heat call.
Both systems are common across our service area, and our technicians carry diagnostic tools and parts for each.
