Bathroom Remodeling on a Budget: Where to Spend and Where to Save
October 28, 2024·6 min read
Bathroom remodel budgets get stretched thin fast, and knowing where the money actually matters helps avoid overspending on the wrong things.
Worth spending more on
- Rough-in plumbing quality — this is invisible once finished but expensive to redo later
- Waterproofing behind tile and around the tub or shower pan
- Ventilation (a quality exhaust fan) to prevent long-term moisture damage
- A well-made tub or shower valve, since these are difficult to access for repairs later
Reasonable places to save
Tile selection, cabinet hardware, and lighting fixtures can often be updated later without touching plumbing, so mid-range choices here rarely hurt long-term value the way cutting corners on rough-in work would.
The plumbing decisions made early in a remodel are the hardest and most expensive to revisit later — which is exactly why they deserve the largest share of scrutiny, even on a tight budget.
