Dishwasher Installation: What to Check Before You Buy
September 22, 2024·4 min read
Before buying a replacement dishwasher, a few measurements and checks can save you from a return trip to the store or an installation delay.
- Measure the existing cabinet opening's width, height, and depth precisely — standard widths vary between 18" and 24" models
- Check whether your kitchen has an existing dedicated electrical circuit, required for most installations
- Confirm there's an accessible shutoff valve for the water supply line
- Note whether your sink has a garbage disposal, since drain line connection differs slightly
If your current setup doesn't have a dishwasher at all, these same questions still apply — they simply need to be addressed as new plumbing and electrical work rather than a straightforward swap.
