Emergency Plumbing Checklist: What to Do Before Help Arrives
August 15, 2025·5 min read
Whether it's a burst pipe, a sewage backup, or total loss of heat, what you do in the first few minutes can meaningfully reduce the damage before help arrives.
For an active leak or burst pipe
- Shut off the main water valve immediately
- Turn off electricity to any affected area if water is near outlets or panels
- Move valuables and furniture away from the affected area
- Take photos for insurance purposes once it's safe to do so
For a sewage backup
- Avoid using any drains or toilets in the home
- Keep children and pets away from the affected area
- Do not attempt to clear the blockage yourself if backup is severe
For no heat in freezing weather
- Check that the thermostat is set correctly and has power
- Let faucets drip slightly to relieve pressure in exposed pipes
- Call for emergency service rather than waiting to see if it resolves itself
