Signs Your Home Still Has Galvanized Pipes

June 22, 2025·5 min read

Galvanized steel pipe was standard in American homes through the mid-20th century, and a large share of NYC's prewar housing stock — especially in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx — still has some or all of its original supply lines.

How to check

  • Pipes appear dull gray and are magnetic (a magnet will stick)
  • Hot water runs noticeably rustier or more discolored than cold
  • Water pressure is persistently low throughout the home
  • Your home was built before roughly 1960 and hasn't been repiped

Why it matters

Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside out, gradually narrowing the usable diameter and eventually failing at joints or thin spots. Once a home starts showing multiple isolated leaks, it's usually a sign the whole system is nearing end of life rather than a series of unrelated coincidences.

A leak detection visit or a straightforward pipe inspection can confirm what material you're working with and whether a phased repiping plan makes sense for your home.
