Sump Pump vs. Sewage Ejector Pump: Which One Does Your Basement Need?

What a sump pump actually does
A sump pump handles groundwater. It sits in a pit at the low point of the basement floor, and as the water table rises during heavy rain or spring melt, water seeps in through the footing drains and collects in that pit. When the water reaches a set level, a float switch turns the pump on and it discharges to the outside, away from the foundation. It is a flood-prevention device, and the only thing it is designed to move is clean water.
What a sewage ejector pump does instead
An ejector pump handles wastewater from fixtures installed below the level of your main sewer line. Gravity drainage only works downhill, so a toilet, sink, shower, or laundry sink in a finished basement usually sits lower than the pipe it needs to drain into. The ejector pump collects that wastewater in a sealed basin and lifts it up to the main line. It is built to pass solids, it is sealed and vented because it handles sewage, and it is required by code for below-grade fixtures — not optional.

Going the other direction is less dangerous but still wrong: an ejector pump used for groundwater is oversized, more expensive, and cycles in a way it was not designed for.
Signs the pump you already have is failing
- It runs constantly, or cycles on and off rapidly in short bursts
- It does not activate at all during heavy rain, and the pit fills
- You hear it running but the water level in the pit does not drop
- There is standing water in the basement despite a pump that appears to be working

Why NYC basements are a particular case
