Cypress Hills Boiler, Pipe & Sewer Repairs
The far eastern edge of Brooklyn, on higher ground and older pipe.
Cypress Hills sits at Brooklyn's eastern boundary, where the borough runs into Woodhaven and Ozone Park. We're based a few minutes west on Hinsdale Street, which makes this one of the shortest runs our trucks make.
The housing here is mostly two- and three-family wood-frame and brick rowhouses built between the 1890s and the 1920s, with a good number of semi-detached houses on the streets climbing toward Highland Park. Frame construction changes how plumbing was run originally — pipe chases through wood framing rather than masonry — and it changes how we open a wall to reach a leak.
Cypress Hills sits on noticeably higher ground than the rest of eastern Brooklyn, on the terminal moraine that runs through Highland Park and the cemeteries. That elevation is genuinely useful: cellars here take on far less groundwater than the low-lying blocks a mile south toward Spring Creek, and sump pump work is a much smaller share of what we do in this ZIP than in Canarsie or the southern end of East New York.
What we get instead is age. A great many of these houses still run original one-pipe steam off a cast-iron boiler, and the supply lines behind the walls are frequently original galvanized narrowed to a fraction of their bore. The calls skew toward boiler repair, low water pressure, and leaks at threaded joints rather than toward flooding.
The streets under the elevated J on Jamaica Avenue and the blocks around Fulton Street carry a mix of residential above commercial, which brings its own pattern — restaurant and storefront waste lines sharing a lateral with the apartments above them, and grease accumulation that no amount of snaking resolves permanently.
Because so much of Cypress Hills is two- and three-family with an owner in one unit, a boiler failure is rarely one household's problem. We're used to coordinating access across tenants and being straight with the owner about which repairs hold through winter and which are buying time.
Housing Context
Two- and three-family wood-frame and brick rowhouses from the 1890s–1920s, semi-detached houses on the slopes toward Highland Park, and mixed residential-over-commercial buildings along Jamaica Avenue and Fulton Street.

Common Issues We See Here
- •Original one-pipe steam boilers in owner-occupied two- and three-family houses
- •Galvanized supply lines with badly reduced flow in un-renovated frame houses
- •Leaks at threaded joints in original supply piping, often inside wood-framed walls
- •Grease accumulation in laterals shared between storefronts and the apartments above
- •Frozen pipes in uninsulated frame walls and unheated rear extensions

FAQ
Cypress Hills Questions
Quickly — our shop is at 657 Hinsdale Street in 11207, a few minutes west. Cypress Hills is one of the shortest runs we make, and emergency calls here generally aren't waiting behind a drive in from another borough.
Yes. We work all of 11208, including City Line and the streets running up to the Woodhaven and Ozone Park border, and we serve Queens as well — so an address straddling the line isn't a problem.
It changes the access more than the repair. Pipe in a frame house runs through wood chases and stud bays rather than masonry, which usually means a smaller, cleaner opening to reach a leak — but it also means water travels along framing before it shows, so finding the actual source matters more.
Elevation. Cypress Hills sits on the higher ground of the terminal moraine running through Highland Park, well above the low-lying land toward Jamaica Bay. Groundwater intrusion is genuinely less common here, which is why we do far less sump pump work in 11208.
Commercial kitchens and residential units sharing one lateral is a common arrangement along Jamaica Avenue and Fulton Street, and grease is usually the cause. Snaking punches a hole through it; hydro-jetting scours the pipe wall, which is what actually buys time. A camera inspection tells you which you need.
There's a $125 diagnostic visit fee, waived when you move forward with the repair. What the repair costs depends on what the diagnosis turns up — we'd rather quote after seeing the system than give you a number that changes in the cellar.
